Canine Hip Dysplasia is a common skeletal conditio Canine Hip Dysplasia is a common skeletal condition. It’s a disease that can affect any dog breed, but it can be especially prevalent in certain breeds like Corgis. ⁣ ⁣ The hip joint functions as a ball and socket. ⁣ ⁣ In dogs with hip dysplasia, the ball and socket do not fit or develop properly, and they rub and grind instead of sliding smoothly. This results in deterioration over time and an eventually loss of joint function. ⁣ ⁣ Several factors lead to the development of hip dysplasia in dogs, but healthy hips starts with healthy genetics.⁣ ⁣ Most cases of Hip Dysplasia can be prevented by an educated breeder who only breeds dogs with healthy hip joints. ⁣ ⁣ Thankfully, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA Hips) and the Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (PennHIP) can help breeders determine the condition of their dogs’ hips, ensuring that they only breed dogs with correct hip joints. ⁣ ⁣ When looking for a reputable breeder to purchase your next puppy from, OFA or PennHIP clearances for BOTH parent dogs should be mandatory. ⁣ ⁣ OFA & PennHIP testing is a great indicator that you have found a breeder that cares about producing healthy puppies with sound structure. ⁣ ⁣ “Do both parents have OFA or PennHIP clearances?” ⁣ ⁣ [This is a X-ray of Koda’s hips that I had taken several years ago. Parasites Suck…⁣ It's not a glamorous topic to Parasites Suck…⁣ It's not a glamorous topic to discuss, but as responsible pet parents, it's important to understand the risks that parasites pose to your pet along with the steps you can take to prevent them. ⁣ ⁣ We often think of parasites as fleas and ticks, but parasites can also come in the form of internal parasites such as roundworm, whipworm, tapeworm, and hookworm. All of which can carry diseases and cause serious harm to your pet. ⁣ ⁣ Unfortunately, actively trying to avoid parasites isn't enough. ⁣ ⁣ Parasites are everywhere. ⁣ ⁣ It's estimated that 50% of dog parks contain roundworm, hookworm, and/or whipworm and nearly 20% of all dogs are actively carrying intestinal parasites. There is no avoiding them.⁣ ⁣ The good news is that parasites are easily preventable! So, when your dog eventually comes in contact with parasites (which they will), they will be prepared. ⁣ ⁣ There are many preventatives out there to choose from. Our preventative of choice is @interceptorplusfordogs because it not only protects against heartworm, but it also protects against 4 kinds of intestinal parasites (roundworm, tapeworm, whipworm, and hookworm.) ⁣ ⁣ It's important to remember that ALL dogs are vulnerable to parasites regardless of where you live. ⁣ ⁣ Year-round prevention is the ONLY way to keep those pesky pests off your pet.
